Governor Baker, Lt. Governor Polito, MBTA and Other Officials Celebrate Opening of Blue Hill Avenue Station

Posted on March 6, 2019

A group of elected officials and community members cut a purple ribbon to celebrate the opening of the Blue Hill Ave station.

Governor Charlie Baker, Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito, MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak, and Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh were joined by elected officials, local stakeholder groups, and members of the Mattapan and Fairmount Line communities to mark the ceremonial opening of the new Blue Hill Avenue Station

“The completion of Blue Hill Avenue Station will provide improved access to economic and educational opportunities for those that reside in communities along the entire Fairmount Line Corridor,” said Governor Charlie Baker. “Investments like Blue Hill Avenue Station are part of our Administration’s work to improve reliability and service for riders across the system.”

“Blue Hill Avenue Station opens new doors for mobility in this neighborhood with a direct, one-seat connection between Mattapan and downtown Boston,” said Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito. “I want to thank the residents of this neighborhood and our Legislative partners for their work on this project.”

“The opening of this station reaffirms the MBTA’s commitment to improve public transit in all the communities we serve,” said Transportation Secretary and CEO Stephanie Pollack. “MassDOT and the MBTA look forward to continuing to advance transportation options in ways that will improve social and economic well-being all across the region.”

“The investment this station represents will lead to enhanced access to jobs, housing, and educational opportunities,” said MBTA General Manager Poftak. “I want to thank the City of Boston and the Mattapan legislative delegation for partnering with us on this project. Most of all, I want to thank the community members for the tireless advocacy of this project.”

A Commuter Rail train with snow pulls up to the new station's platform.

Constructed by McCourt Construction for a contract amount of $16.97 million, Blue Hill Avenue Station opened on schedule and on budget after a 2-year construction period that began in 2017.

“The opening of the Blue Hill Avenue commuter rail stop is good for Mattapan, Boston, and our entire community, connecting more people and bringing more opportunity to our neighborhoods,” said Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh. “I thank all our partners for making this possible, and believing in the power of public transit.”

“I am excited about this important step towards transit equity for the residents of Dorchester and Mattapan,” said Senator Nick Collins. “Rapid transit breaks down barriers to economic mobility, and I look forward to continue working with the administration to further activate the Fairmount Line.”

“This is what a victory in the fight for transit equity looks like. This is a big win for all of Mattapan,” said Representative Dan Cullinane, who represents the district where the station is located. “Every day this train would pass through Mattapan, yet people from Mattapan did not have access to it. Together we changed that. Now Mattapan residents have a 25-minute, single seat ride into Downtown Boston. That is a huge deal for the neighborhood with the longest commutes into the City. This was not an easy fight and not everyone wanted this to happen. I will be forever proud of and grateful for all those who mobilized for transit equity in the community and in government, past and present, who made this historic moment a reality for Mattapan. It was worth it.”

A group of communitiy advocates and MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak pose on the platform with a new station sign.

“Blue Hill Avenue Station will be life-changing for our constituents who travel downtown daily,” said Representative Russell Holmes. “They will save a half hour each way daily. That translates to giving these constituents two weeks of their lives in travel back each year!”

Blue Hill Avenue is located within the Zone 1A fare zone.

With platform access via entryways at both Blue Hill Avenue and Cummins Highway, the station features:

  • an 800-foot, high-level, center-island platform
  • passenger shelters, canopies, benches, windscreens
  • 2 fully accessible pedestrian ramps
  • service messaging signage
  • brand new security equipment

As the ninth station added to the Fairmount Line, the station is located between Fairmount and Morton Street Stations, and is approximately 6.5 miles from South Station and a quarter mile from Mattapan Square.

The construction of Blue Hill Avenue Station is part of $130 million in Fairmount Line investments. The series of investments led to the opening of Talbot Avenue Station in 2012, the opening of Newmarket and Four Corners/Geneva Avenue Stations in 2013, bridge replacements, and significant rail and tie replacement work. The opening of Blue Hill Avenue Station marks the completion of the Fairmount Commuter Rail Line.
