Traffic Detours in Westwood for East Street Bridge Rehabilitation Work

Posted on April 3, 2019

Beginning April 13, one-way traffic will operate along East Street in Westwood in support of the East Street Bridge Rehabilitation Project. The work of lowering the roadway will begin at 6 AM on Saturday, April 13, and end at 6 PM on Sunday, April 20.

Originally constructed in 1911, the East Street Bridge in Westwood carries the Franklin Commuter Rail Line with construction efforts focused on extending the bridge’s useful life. With construction on the existing bridge ongoing since March 2018, this lane shutdown is necessary to support the roadway lowering phase of the project and to increase the vertical clearance of the bridge to 13 feet, 3 inches when the project is complete in fall 2019.

The road heading westbound will be shut down at the rotary over I-95/Route 128. Local traffic only will be permitted to pass through to Carroll Avenue. The road heading eastbound will be open to traffic throughout the duration of the closure. The roadway will also be open to pedestrian traffic throughout the duration of the shutdown.

Those traveling westbound from I-95/Route 128 should take the University Avenue exit and follow University Avenue to US Route 1, stay on University Avenue to cross US Route 1 onto Everett Street, turn right onto Washington Street, and proceed to East Street.

Local traffic or traffic that comes through the closure at the rotary should turn right onto Carroll Avenue and follow Carol Avenue to US Route 1, turn right onto US Route 1 southbound, turn right onto Everett Street, turn right onto Washington Street, and proceed to East Street.

Detour signage will be in place to direct traffic traveling to East Street.
