Bringing Your Bike on the Train

Follow these tips for a smooth ride on the MBTA subway or Commuter Rail with your bike:

  • Enter the station through the widest fare gate
  • Walk or carry your bike on the stairs, or use the elevator to get to the platform
  • Don't take your bike on the escalator
  • Don't ride your bike in the station

Check bike rules for your line

Boarding Trains with a Bike

subway Subway

  • Board at the end of the car
  • Only two bikes are allowed on each car, one at either end

Commuter Rail Commuter Rail

Follow the conductor's instructions to board with your bike or scooter.

  • Up to four bikes and/or scooters may be permitted per open coach on off-peak trains, but may be prohibited on any train if coaches become too crowded
  • Bikes and scooters must never be stored or placed in the outer vestibule between coaches
  • When fully folded, folding bikes and scooters are allowed on trains at all times

Please wait for the next train if:

  • The current train is too crowded to accommodate a bike
  • The maximum number of bikes has already boarded
  • An older adult or person with a disability needs the priority space on the car or coach

In an emergency, leave your bike on the train and keep it clear of aisles and doors so that other passengers can evacuate.

If a service disruption requires that shuttle buses replace trains, bike racks may not be available near the shuttle bus stops.

Things to Know Before You Board

  • Bikes must be attended at all times
  • They must be stored in designated areas at the end of the coach or car

  • Bikes are considered to be mobility devices when used by people with disabilities
  • Older adults and people with disabilities have priority over bikes
  • The bike and scooter policy for Commuter Rail trains is subject to the discretion of the conductor
  • Riders who fail to abide by these rules or who refuse to follow instructions from MBTA officials may be directed to leave the train
