Aquarium Station Floodproofing
- Contract awarded: August 2020
- Project completed: March 2021
- Budget: $1,735,097
- Status: 100% construction complete
Between August 2020 and March 2021, we installed floodproofing barriers around four entrances to Aquarium Station on the Blue Line. Crews installed this equipment to make the station more resilient against the risk of flooding during severe weather.
Crews added floodproofing infrastructure to four different locations around the station:
- Aquarium Station head house and elevator
- West Station head house at Market Place Center
- Southwest Station head house
- Long Wharf emergency kiosk
Building a Better T
As part of our $9.6 billion, 5-year capital investment plan, we're renovating stations, modernizing fare collection systems, upgrading services for our buses, subways, and ferries, and improving the accessibility of the entire system.
Why We Did This Work
Given its proximity to Boston Harbor, Aquarium station could be at risk for flooding during storm surges. These barriers will improve station resiliency and prevent service disruptions during severe weather.
When Boston experiences severe weather, our crews will monitor the station’s flooding status and install additional aluminum planks if extra floodproofing is needed.
