New Orange Line Trains Join the Fleet

We’re excited to welcome the second brand-new Orange Line train to the fleet. It joins the first train, which went into service Wednesday, August 14, 2019.
You’ll see the trains in service most weekdays during the morning rush and into the afternoon. We’re not running them full time yet as we closely monitor them and fine-tune software.
And you might notice 4-car trains running with a "Test Train" sign—these will be the next cars to enter service. They’re in the last phase of testing before joining the fleet.

As part of our $9.6 billion, 5-year capital investment plan, we're renovating stations, modernizing fare collection systems, upgrading services for our buses, subways, and ferries, and improving the accessibility of the entire system.

New Fleet
The entire Orange Line fleet will be fully replaced by 2022—and the fleet size is growing, from 120 cars to 152 cars.

- Projected completion: 2022
- Budget: $1 billion (total value for Orange Line and Red Line new vehicles)
- Status: 2 new trains added to the fleet; more in testing
The new cars are modern, more efficient, and more spacious. You'll notice:
Wider doors for improved boarding access
- 2 more accessibility areas on each car
- Modern visual and audio communication systems
- Backup HVAC systems in each car
- More handrails throughout each car
People with disabilities will be safer and more comfortable:
- Modern LED lighting systems for improved visibility
- Audio and visual door open and close warnings
In the coming weeks and months, more cars will be joining regular service.
