MBTA Launches Pilot of New Automated Securement System on Several Buses
Updated on February 2, 2021
For years, the MBTA has used a four-point manual securement system on buses to keep riders’ wheeled mobility devices in place. In 2021, we will begin piloting a new, fully automated system called Quantum. This new system uses a robotic arm around the device’s wheels that automatically adjusts its grip throughout the trip to ensure safety. The system also allows riders to independently secure and release their device with the push of a button.
Riders can find the new system on Route 111 buses in early February 2021. Quantum will also be available for viewing and use later this year at central locations in and around Boston. Be sure to subscribe to System-Wide Accessibility email updates to receive notifications of these opportunities.
We will be asking riders who use the new system to fill out a survey about their experiences and their feedback will help inform our decision to install the Quantum system on additional buses.
