South Coast Rail Fall Update

The South Coast Rail will offer a reliable Commuter Rail connection between Southeastern Massachusetts and Boston. Phase 1 will provide riders with a one-seat ride between Boston and Fall River, and between Boston and New Bedford, for the first time since the late 1950s.

Construction Progress Update
Crews have made significant progress, and construction activity is underway in every city and town along the right-of-way (ROW) that will be ready for revenue service by the end of 2023.
- The Fall River Line contract is on schedule and is 35% complete
- The Middleboro/New Bedford Line/Signals contract is on schedule and 18% complete
- Sheeting and pile walls are being installed, with more than 10,000 linear feet completed on the Fall River Line and 3,900 linear feet on the New Bedford/ Middleborough Line
- Bridges and culverts are being replaced and grade crossings are being upgraded
We’re also replacing or rebuilding seven railroad bridges along the Fall River Secondary Line.

What to Know about Construction
Construction activity takes place Monday through Friday, beginning at 7 AM and ending by 7 PM.
During track outages, crews work 24-hour days for four to five days. Communities will be notified in advance of these events.
